ABOUT THE MODERATOR:
Derek B. Miller, President and CEO
World Trade Center Utah
Derek B. Miller is the president and CEO of the World Trade Center Utah, an organization dedicated to helping Utah companies ?think, act, and succeed globally.? WTC Utah is a member of the World Trade Center Association headquartered in New York City, a network of more than 300 WTC?s in 100 countries around the world, with the mission to facilitate prosperity through trade and investment.
Prior to his current position, Mr. Miller served as chief of staff to Governor Gary R. Herbert, overseeing the Governor?s Office, the Governor?s Cabinet and state operations. Mr. Miller has also served as managing director of the Governor?s Office of Economic Development where he was responsible for recruiting new businesses to the state and helping existing Utah businesses to expand.
Before moving back to his home state of Utah, Mr. Miller worked in Washington D.C. for the U.S. House of Representatives as legal counsel and for Arthur Andersen as a management consultant. Mr. Miller is a graduate of the J. Reuben Clark Law School at Brigham Young University, and he also holds a Master of Public Administration from the University?s Romney Institute of Public Management.
ABOUT THE PANELISTS:
Colleen Loveless, Founder
Love-Less Ash Company
Colleen Loveless was born and raised in Huntington, Utah and loves being a country girl. Colleen and her husband Mike started Love-Less Ash Company in 1988 in the garage behind their home.
Everything started when Mike had a good idea of inventing an Ash Vacuum for their personal wood stove. Mike and Colleen worked side by side for 20 years with Mike specializing in design and production and Colleen specialized in accounting and procurement. Mike passed away in an airplane accident in 2008. Their son Spencer, who had been working for the company in designing new products, then stepped in to help fill his father?s void so Colleen now gets to work with her son every day. Together they are expanding and growing and dealing with new challenges every day.
They have developed a family of ?Dust Control? products over the years since then and their dba of Dustless Technologies has become a leader in the construction and industrial markets specializing in ?Innovative Dust Control Solutions.? Currently 13 products are patented. Sales are made throughout the US and Canada as well as a number of foreign countries for various products. Dustless Technologies also has products produced overseas from our dust shroud designs.
Colleen has 2 children and 7 grandchildren that bring her joy every day.
Julianna Christie, Founder
Gray Matter Consulting
Julianna Christie has been working as a consultant for over twenty years. Her titles include research moderator, facilitator, trainer and leadership development coach. She works with individuals and groups ? leading them to discover insights, develop creativity, and work more productively. She works both independently and as a subcontractor for companies around the globe.
Julianna is based here in Salt Lake City and her company is called Gray Matter Consulting.
Liz Kennard Butcher, Founder and Director
Butcher?s Bunches
Liz Butcher is the founder/director of operations for Butcher?s Bunches Handcrafted Preserves, which is located in Logan, Utah. The company was born when the Butcher family used produce from their garden to make "real" jams that everyone, including those with sugar restrictions, could eat. These jams were a hit at local farmers markets. Now, more than seven years later, the jams have evolved into a full-fledged business.
Prior to starting Butcher?s Bunches, Liz worked in mortgage lending for First Security Bank and as a private accountant. She has also held several positions with MLMs. Liz attended both BYU and Utah State University. She majored in English at the Y and American Studies at Utah State.
Ariel Briggs, STEP Program Director
Governor?s Office of Economic Development
Ms. Briggs has been with the Governor?s Office of Economic Development for 5 years in the State Trade & Expansion Program and the International Trade & Diplomacy Office, where she has played a leading role planning and executing trade shows, trade missions, public events, hosting diplomats, and monitoring and evaluation of activities. She works directly with Utah?s small and medium-sized enterprises assisting to increase exports. She has conducted many projects from around the world including a long stint in Africa with Peace Corps Zambia where she organized community-based natural resource management systems and created revenue streams for local businesses and communities. Ms. Briggs has a Masters of International Affairs & Global Enterprise from the University of Utah where her studies focused on foreign direct investment in developing economies. She obtained a Bachelor?s of Science from Utah State University focusing on environmental and land-use concerns.
Shelby L. Peterson, Acting Director of the Utah Export Assistance Center
U.S. Commercial Service
Shelby L. Peterson is the Acting Director of the Utah Export Assistance Center, a field office for the U.S. Commercial Service, under the U.S. Department of Commerce. Ms. Peterson has been in Utah for just over three years and counsels and guides Utah Companies through the export process from beginning to end. Such counsel includes how to find and develop international sales, comply with applicable laws and regulations, fulfill documentation requirements and overcome trade barriers. Prior to moving to Utah, Ms. Peterson spent seven years in Washington, DC working with the U.S. Census Bureau, the Commercial Service Office of Strategic Planning and the Commercial Service Trade Promotion Programs Office where she coordinated export services at over 30 trade shows worldwide.
Ms. Peterson holds a B.A, magna cum laude in economics, public administration and political science from Elon University in North Carolina. Ms. Peterson also has her Certified Global Business Professional credential as administered by NASBITE International. In her free time, Ms. Peterson is an avid outdoors woman enjoying all of what Utah has to offer whether it be on skis, a mountain bike, in hiking boots, or dabbling in watersports. Ms. Peterson currently resides in Ogden, Utah with her fiancé and their Labrador retriever.

If you are driving, please park in the west side of the parking lot at the Chamber building. When you arrive, proceed to the left/west (monthly and validated parking) area and take a ticket and pass through the yellow parking gate. We?ll provide validations upstairs at the front desk. Do not enter on the right/east side and park in the two rows closest to the building or you will have to pay in advance and we will not be able to validate your parking.
