Airports
Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) is located 15 minutes from the center of downtown and serves more than 26 million passengers each year. SLC is the 23rd busiest airport in North America and the 86th busiest in the world. Fourteen airlines and their affiliates operate upwards of 320 flights daily to nearly 100 non-stop destinations with international non-stop service to Canada, France, Mexico and the Netherlands. SLC is a hub for Delta Air Lines, which operates about 70 percent of market share.
SLC opened a new terminal complex in fall 2020 to better serve its passengers. The former airport terminal was built in 1961 and had grown into a hub airport with many flights arriving and leaving about the same time each day. Security needs are vastly different than in 1960 as are earthquake safety standards.
The New SLC broke ground in 2014 and Phase 1 of the $5.1 billion project opened in fall of 2020. The three-story terminal and concourses A and B replaced 29 outdated structures that were connected, including three separate terminals and five concourses. Phase 2 opened in fall 2023 and Phase 3 in fall 2024. Phase 4 is currently under construction with an anticipated completion date of fall 2026 with a total of 94 gates.
The New SLC was designed by architectural firm HOK to be convenient, inspiring and sustainable. The new design celebrates Utah’s natural beauty and reputation as an outdoor recreation hub. Floor-to-ceiling glass provides expansive views to the airfield and mountains and an uplifting ambiance. www.slcairport.com.
